At Vee, we’re fortunate to work alongside nonprofits whose missions remind us why technology should exist in the first place. ACTS (Action in Community Through Service) is one of those organizations—deeply rooted in compassion, guided by service, and relentlessly focused on helping people through crisis and into stability.
For more than 56 years, ACTS has been a cornerstone of support in Prince William County, Virginia, meeting neighbors at their point of need and walking with them until they can stand on their own.
A Mission Built on Showing Up
ACTS was founded in 1969, when a family lost their home in a fire. Thirteen churches came together to provide housing, food, and household goods. That moment of collective care evolved into an organization that now serves tens of thousands of people each year.
Today, ACTS delivers services across four critical pillars:
Domestic violence and sexual assault services — the only provider in Prince William County
Housing assistance for families and individuals
Hunger prevention, serving more than 10,000 families in FY25
Crisis intervention that leads to long-term self-sufficiency
Their mission remains simple and unwavering:
Foster hope, provide relief, and promote self-sufficiency.
“It’s the only organization I’ve ever worked for where I don’t think the mission statement ever needs to change,” says Stan, CEO of ACTS. “It perfectly captures what we do every single day.”
Doing More as the Need Grows
The demand for ACTS’ services continues to rise, even as resources tighten. Over the past two years, the organization has reduced its staff by nearly one-third, a reality shared by many nonprofits nationwide.
“We feel it every day,” Stan explains. “Everyone is working more than they should, and the work itself is emotionally demanding. You’re serving people in crisis, often dealing with trauma.”
In that environment, efficiency isn’t a luxury—it’s survival.
Why Vee Was an Easy Decision
When considering Vee, Stan approached it the same way he approaches every leadership decision:
“I always ask, Is the juice worth the squeeze?”
For ACTS, the answer came quickly.
“When you’re running a nonprofit, you have to ask what tools will give you a real return—tools that allow you to keep serving people even when resources are stretched,” Stan says. “Vee checked that box for us.”
Rather than resisting AI, ACTS chose to embrace it thoughtfully.
“We’re living in a time where you either fight AI or you figure out how to use it to your advantage,” Stan shares. “For us, there was no question—we needed to learn how to leverage it responsibly.”
Vee as a Force Multiplier, Not a Replacement
Stan is clear: Vee doesn’t replace people—it extends them.
“We use Vee supplementally,” he explains. “It’s not the main source of our fundraising efforts, but it opens doors we would never be able to open on our own.”
With Vee, ACTS gains access to insights across hundreds of private and nonprofit funders nationwide, expanding opportunities without adding headcount.
“If I can have a mechanism that helps pursue grants we’d never otherwise pursue—and it’s working while my staff is asleep—why wouldn’t we use it?” Stan says.
He adds:
“It would actually be an unwise decision not to leverage a tool like Vee, especially given the cost compared to hiring a full-time person.”
“This Is Where We Get the Best Bang for the Buck”
While grant discovery is powerful, Stan points to one Vee feature as truly transformational:
Maggie, Vee’s Social Media Content Manager.
“Let me tell you what I really love about Vee,” Stan says. “Maggie is a game changer for us.”
Social media is essential—but time-consuming.
“Social media moves at a whiz-bang speed, and you have to keep up if you want people to understand your impact,” he explains. “Maggie makes that possible for a small organization like ours.”
With Maggie, ACTS can:
Plan campaigns around annual initiatives
Share impact stories and testimonials consistently
Highlight the real people behind the mission
Reach different audiences with intentional messaging
“This is where we get the best bang for the buck,” Stan says. “Maggie managing our content costs a whole lot less than hiring another staff member—and we still have the final say.”
He emphasizes:
“There’s a lot of fear around AI taking control. But that’s not how this works. What you put in is what you get out. Vee helps us tell our story—not replace it.”
A Message to Fellow Nonprofit Leaders
For other nonprofit executives considering new tools, Stan offers grounded advice:
“You have to be client-focused, but you also have to run the business. Those two things aren’t in conflict—they’re inseparable.”
And above all:
“If you’re going to work in a nonprofit, you have to believe in what you’re doing. You have to be able to answer the question: What difference will my life make?”
For Stan, the answer is clear—and it’s reflected in ACTS’ impact every day.
